"Be Cool" is a movie that knows it is a movie. It knows it is a sequel and contains disparaging
references to sequels. All very cute at the screenplay stage, where everybody can sit around
at story conferences and assume that a scene will work because the scene it refers to worked.

Be Cool, the belated sequel to 1995's Get Shorty, has moments when we
think it's going to work. It occasionally tantalizes with witty dialogue and sharp
supporting performances. Alas, those are only teases - the film is priming us for
something that never happens.

The Boston Globe
Dated 'Be Cool' comes up short-y. Despite its title, there's nothing cool about F. Gary Gray's
adaptation of novelist Elmore Leonard's punch-drunk music-biz satire, ''Be Cool."

USA Today
Elmore Leonard fans will want to shoot Be Cool a few icy stares, despite the fleeting
surface appeal (which is all this movie has) of watching a noisy cast backdrop Chili
Palmer's return to the screen.

San Francisco Chronicle
"Be Cool," the sequel to "Get Shorty," is almost two hours of appealing nonsense, about competing gangs
and factions warring to control the destiny of a promising young singer.
