Latifah is profoundly comfortable with herself, and "Beauty Shop" is comfortable with itself. It isn't simply trying to turn up the heat under a "Barbershop" clone, but to be more plausible (not a lot, but a little) in the story of a woman starting her own business. It's more of a human comedy than stand-up or slapstick.
Roger Ebert
The Boston Globe
This formulaic but extremely good-natured comedy spins Queen Latifah off from the ''Barbershop" franchise, lands her in Atlanta, and surrounds her with a chick-flick supporting cast that almost supports her right out of the movie. Which, when you think about it, isn't a simple task. But the star doesn't seem to mind and, as long as you go in with expectations set medium to low, neither will you.
Ty Burr
San Francisco Chronicle
At its warmhearted center, "Beauty Shop" is a workshop in how to walk around like Oprah with a feeling of confidence and entitlement, not a natural state for many women. This may sound too much like the Learning Annex, but the movie royally pulls it off with regal assistance from Queen Latifah.
Ruthe Stein
USA Today
Its tone set by the savvy character created by the talented Queen Latifah, Beauty Shop has some funny gags and broadly comic moments. The plot progression can be guessed early on, but the film is more about humor and heart than a clever story.
