Chicago Sun Times
Kevin Spacey believes he was born to play Bobby Darin. I believe he was born
to play more interesting characters, and has, and will, but I can see his point.
He looks a little like Darin and sounds a lot like him, and apparently when he
was growing up he formed one of those emotional connections with a performer where
admiration is mixed with pity.
Roger Ebert
Boston Globe
I knew almost nothing about the singer and actor Bobby Darin before sitting
through Kevin Spacey's new film about him. And having seen ''Beyond the Sea,"
all I can really tell you is that he sure did act a lot like Spacey.
Wesley Morris
Film Critic
I can indulge in a biography of Ray Charles; I can stomach an exploration of Cole Porter; but after Beyond the Sea’s portrayal of yet
another famous musician, I need some Tums. That’s not to say the film lacks artistic merit, it’s just the
victim of bad timing.
Blake French
New York Times
The matching of two slithery chameleons, the singer Bobby Darin and his latter-day doppelgänger,
Kevin Spacey, in ''Beyond the Sea'' sparks a weird bluish flame that suggests a wax Yule log
posing as wood in the season's teeming fireplace of movie biographies.
Stephen Holden
USA Today
Spacey looks enough like Darin to be credible — and sings not only well, but enough like his
subject to fool a listener's ears. But beyond this, Sea marks the first time since American
Beauty that the actor, who also directs here, really seems to be enjoying himself on screen.
