Based on the first of Ian Fleming’s novels, ‘‘Casino Royale’’ is an origin story, and it wants very much to be this year’s ‘‘Batman Begins’’ — a movie that resets the clock to zero and tells the tale with new and becoming leanness.

Meet the new Bond, not the same as the old Bond -- and thank God for that. The James Bond franchise is born again in "Casino Royale," or should I say Bourne again...

My hope is that Casino Royale has not only re-invented James Bond, but made him relevant for the 21st century. The target audience has shifted. Although there's nothing in Casino Royale that will exclude teenagers, this 007 is aimed squarely at adults.

"Casino Royale" is fresh, actually fresh. When you consider how long the Bond series has tried to regain, imitate or fabricate freshness, that's quite an achievement.

Though Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan distinguished themselves in previous movies, Daniel Craig has made Bond his own. His portrayal feels grittier and more complex than previous 007s.
