Directed by D.J. Caruso with all the gaudy gadgetry and Hitchcockian models at his disposal, it's a movie full of high-tech shocks, suburban high school comedy and violent suspense set-pieces.

Disturbia is a critically vulnerable film at the outset. Its task is an audacious one: "YouTubing" Hitchcock. Who isn't disturbed by the prospect of D.J. Caruso helming a Rear Window rip-off for the MySpace generation?

Disturbia is a nice little mystery thriller that takes a wrong turn on the way to its climax and morphs into a slasher movie. This abrupt change in tone is as jarring as it is unwelcome and transforms what could have been an effectively tense conclusion into something so over-the-top that it's almost laughable.

Disturbia is Rear Window for the generation raised on MySpace and cellphones. And though it's not likely to become a classic like the Hitchcock film, it's a smart and well-acted teen thriller that serves up some lively scares.
