Ultraviolet DVD

New DVD cloud service called Ultraviolet
Written: 11-13-2011

What is the future of DVD sales? Short answer; uncertain. In the past Hollywood could count on several million additional dollars in DVD sales after a movie made hundreds of millions of dollars at the box-office. Internet and streaming movie technologies have created issues for movie studios. Physical DVDs may soon go the way of the compact disc (CD) as more movies are delivered through online services.

This may be why the movie studios created a new DVD service called Ultraviolet. Ultraviolet offers several online features when buying a physical DVD. This allows you to gain both the benefits of cloud (online compute storage and service) services and the satisfaction on owning a physical disc.

The first feature of ultraviolet is the ability to access your movie titles online through your Ultraviolet Digital Library. This allows you to watch your movie whenever and wherever you want. You can watch it on your big screen television in your home, on your personal computer, or on your smart phone. It has a "remember" feature that allows you to switch between multiple devices and pick up where you left off. Another feature of Ultraviolet is the ability to have multiple users. Up to six individuals or a household can share a single Ultraviolet library.

Your online UltraViolet Library doesn't take any of your own disk space as content is stored in the cloud which helps with backup and protection against computer data loss. The service is backed by many of the world's leading entertainment and technology companies. They are working together to push and profit from UltraViolet. They don't want to make the same mistake as they did a few years back with the HD DVD war.

Question: How much more do DVD's cost when they include the Ultraviolet service?

Answer: The Ultraviolet Library and online services are free. The DVD costs are set by the individual studios, however the Ultraviolet service is packaged mostly with Blu-ray DVDs, so from that perspective it is more expensive than buying a standard DVD.

I have a non HD receiver in my home that I purchased outright from DISH. I didn't want to pay a recurring fee every month to keep my cost down. I would like to add a few additional TVs (upstair bedrooms). I called Dish to ask how much the receivers were and that I was again interested in paying for them outright. They gave me a good price for a dual and standard so I could hook up an additional 3 TVs in the home. When I decided to go for it, they informed me that I would have to pay an additional $28.00 per month (more than half my monthly bill already) to have these TVs connected and to receive signal. Is this true? You must pay each additional TV connected in the home? Is there a way I can hook up my additional TVs to the existing receiver I have without having to pay for this monthly?

I haven't had cable since 1992, so that hasn't been an issue. I'm glad to know I will be able to block out programs should I ever choose to get it. However, what I would like is for my kids to not be able to turn the TV on at all during certain hours. For example, as when they get home from school before I get home from work.
