Fantastic Four is the comic book that gave birth to Marvel Comics, making it the older sibling to such better-known titles as Spider-Man, X-Men, and The Incredible Hulk. The reason Fantastic Four has been relegated to the role of "ugly stepsister" is simple: a lack of publicity.
James Berardinelli
Chicago Sun-Times
And the really good superhero movies, like "Superman," "SpiderMan 2" and "Batman Begins," leave "Fantastic Four" so far behind that the movie should almost be ashamed to show itself in the same theaters.
Roger Ebert
San Francisco Chronicle
The wretched business for this week is "Fantastic Four," an action fantasy based on a Marvel comic book series. It's about four people who are zapped by radiation but, alas, don't die. Instead, they take on special powers that the filmmakers are incapable of making interesting, partly because the characters are ciphers, and partly because the story is listless and uninventive.
Mick LaSalle
USA Today
Like the sulfurous Human Torch, who bursts into flames at will, it is capable of impressive pyrotechnic displays. But like Mr. Fantastic, whose limbs and torso elongate like taffy, it stretches its story line's credibility to the breaking point.
