Because "Fever Pitch" involves a Boston Red Sox fan and takes place during the miraculous 2004 season, do not make the mistake of thinking it is a baseball movie. It is a movie about how men and women, filled with love and motivated by the best will in the world, simply do not speak the same emotional language.

Fever Pitch is a curious mix of smarts and schmaltz... The Farrelly Brothers, operating outside of There's Something About Mary territory, prove that they are as capable of bringing a generic, formulaic romantic comedy to the screen as they are of producing something more edgy.

You're a young professional woman who's been dating for, what, your entire adult life. Your problem (you've been told) is that you intimidate too many men. You meet this cute, funny, sensitive, straight guy, a high-school teacher, which is not exactly the profession you had in mind.

Tolerable Fever Pitch's comic temperature falls short of lukewarm, but on the subject of men and women, it's on to something. Full of sexual fracas-ing sparked by "guy" obsessions, the Farrelly brothers' latest movie is a sort of undercooked Diner.

"Fever Pitch," a fable that pits true love against baseball love, is one of the most ingratiating romantic comedies in quite some time, yet the fact that it was directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly almost works against it.
