"Ghost Rider" is the kind of movie that's great stupid fun as long as someone else is buying the tickets. The genre might be summed up as Redneck Horror Faust, or maybe Nascar Goth.

It's gotten to the point where almost any movie with a narrated prologue is suspect. But the opening section of the comic-book adaptation Ghost Rider starts with a particularly troubling apocalyptic rumble of exposition.

Despite an incredibly silly premise, the comic was popular at one time, possibly because of the cool image presented by the title character. With its cheesy special effects and blasphemously imbecilic storyline, one wonders whether the celluloid version of Ghost Rider will find an audience.

It's fascinating to watch an actor who thinks he's in a good film when he's really in a bad one. Perhaps Nicolas Cage was trying to elevate "Ghost Rider" with the power of his performance.
