"Gracie," a predictable but nicely acted triumph of the soccer-phenom spirit, takes place in 1978, long before parents read much about the perils of raising Ophelia or misunderstanding Cain, and the gender roles their kids learned by example.

Gracie is a by-the-numbers sports drama about a young girl who defies the odds to succeed in an all-male arena. It's the kind of thing that might make for a compelling after school special, but is hardly what one expects to spend $10 for at a multiplex.

Gosh knows, there's no more overworked genre in all of moviedom than the inspirational sports drama: the one in which some unlikely player or small-town team finds the inner strength to overcome the odds and win the big game: "Rocky Umpteenth."

USA Today
Though its heart is in the right place, Gracie has the predictable and formulaic feel of so many inspirational sports dramas.
