HD Programming

One of the first decisions you get to make after buying an HD television is whether you should upgrade to HD programming. Some of us are pixel watching maniacs while others don't notice the difference between standard and HD reception. Consider the following factors before upgrading to HD programming.

Do you watch more DVDs or TV programs? If you are more of a movie watcher you may want to consider buying an HDMI DVD player. Normal DVD's look very good on an HDTV and most consumers choose not to upgrade to HD DVDs as there is still considerable cost to do so.

Which channels and TV shows do you watch the most? Not all channels and shows are available in HD. For example if you love Survivor or Amazing Race do not upgrade for these shows alone. This is because they are not offered in HD, mostly because it would be difficult to lug around HD cameras while chasing after racers or on some remote island. There is not a master list (at least that I know of) that offers whether or not a show is available in HD. Most shows will have some kind of message stating "available in HD" for the first minute or so of the program. Also be careful of making the assumption that all programs on an HD channel are always in high definition. For example, I was watching a football game on ESPN-HD that was not HD because the football stadium must not have been able to support it. Another consideration for those who mostly watch local channels, HD programming is available for free in many areas with use of an HDTV Antenna. The key take-away is not all shows are available in HD so don't upgrade until you determine that several of your favorite television shows and channels are broadcasted in HD.

The third and most important factor is cost. There will most likely be a one time setup fee with cable and satellite companies and an additional monthly fee. Most companies will upgrade you for around $200 bucks. In fact several are offering discounts and incentives which make the one time setup almost free. The monthly fees can range from $10 to $20 a month. Do not pay more than an additional $20 a month because Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish Network all offer HD packages between $10 and $20 a month.

In summary, determine if you watch DVDs or television programming more. Next, try and find out if your favorite shows and channels are offered in HD, with the understanding that some shows may not be in high definition even though the channel is offered in HD. Last, but not least, determine if the cost is worth the availability.

As for me, I love sports and do watch a handful of TV shows that are available in HD so I determined that it was worth the additional cost. By the way, I absolutely love it! I am one of those pixel watching maniacs and thoroughly enjoy watching college football in high definition.
