As family films go, Herbie: Fully Loaded is adequate fare. Children will probably enjoy it and most parents will be able to tolerate it. It's a breezy affair that doesn't overstay its welcome, and there are plenty of '80s songs on the lively soundtrack. I suppose Herbie has some nostalgic appeal, but the main draw will be to a new generation. It remains to be seen whether Herbie: Fully Loaded gives the car another lease on life or finally sends it to the cinematic junkyard.

The question that haunted me during "Herbie: Fully Loaded" involved the degree of Herbie's intelligence. Is the car alive? Can it think? Does it have feelings? Can it really fall in love, or is its romance with that cute little yellow VW bug just a cynical ploy to get publicity, since it has a new movie coming out?

Disney has gone back to the cedar closet again and come out with "Herbie: Fully Loaded," a remake of the studio's goofy polyester-era series about a Volkswagen bug with a mischievous soul. Fully loaded with what? you may ask. Product placement, as far as I can tell.

With "Mean Girls" sex kitten Lindsay Lohan in the starring role, and a title that's one action verb away from a porn movie, "Herbie: Fully Loaded" is a Disney film in disguise.
