There is a purpose for a movie like "Hitch," and that purpose is to supply a pleasant and
undemanding romantic comedy that you can rent next Valentine's Day. It's not a first-run
destination, especially with "Bride and Prejudice" and "The Wedding Date" playing in the
same multiplex. It's not that I dislike it; it's that it just doesn't seem entirely necessary.

Will Smith is a smooth operator in pleasantly painless romantic comedy 'Hitch'

"Hitch," in movie parlance, means Alfred Hitchcock, but not when it's
Will Smith brandishing the moniker. As Hollywood's most acceptable date
movie in a while, the affable Hitch may have its surprises, but Smith's
casting isn't among them. This is a good fit.

Will Smith cemented himself as the coolest guy in movies several years ago. But he never made a romantic
comedy before "Hitch,'' and the picture's first scenes show how this might have happened. Rendered in small,
perfect doses between fights with aliens and robots, his self-assured quips work wonders. As the meat of a
movie, they threaten to be overkill.
