Such a Hitchhiker Master would be able to review this movie in terms of its in-jokes, its references to various generations of the Guide universe, its earlier manifestations as books, radio shows, a TV series and the center of a matrix of Web sites. He would understand what the filmmakers have done with Adams' material, and how, and why, and whether the film is faithful to the spirit of the original.

For those who are fans of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's five-book "trilogy," I have two words of advice: Don't Panic! The 2005 film version of the book isn't nearly as bad as many Hitchhiker's lovers have feared. Of course, it's also not as good as it could have been. For the most part, this big-screen re-telling of Adams' inaugural book plays it safe, offers some solid performances and nice special effects, and provides some chuckles along the way.

Don't panic: The long-awaited film adaptation of Douglas Adams's beloved science-fiction cult novel is not the disaster it might have been. There are inspired performances and belly laughs. Adams's tricky tone -- imagine the Pythons rewriting "Star Wars" -- has made it onto the screen. The answer to life, the universe, and everything is still 42.

Is that thumb you use to finagle a ride going to point up or down when assessing the big-screen version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? If a certain spottiness makes this a tough call, the movie probably is on beam often enough to keep Douglas Adams enthusiasts from wanting to blast its negative into outer space.
