Yes, "Ice Princess" is a formula movie. Yes, it makes all the stops and hits all the beats and, yes, it ends exactly as we expect it will. It even has the inevitable scene where the gifted young heroine is in the middle of her performance and she looks up into the audience -- and there she is! Her mother!

This 'Ice Princess' has a warm heart. Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg) is a physics whiz. She's earned straight A-pluses and is on the fast track for a scholarship and a spot in Harvard's freshman class, where I'm sure she'd happily give President Larry Summers a piece of her very scientific mind.

The best thing about "Ice Princess" is the performance of Hayden Panettiere, who isn't the lead in this routine Disney sports movie but plays the daughter of an ice-skating coach. She's only 16, but she has a way of thinking on camera and conveying a mix of emotions simultaneously that jumps off the screen. The performance promises better things to come, though, to be fair, "Ice Princess" is a cut above most pictures of its type.

Given the luxurious but difficult choice between going to Harvard on a physics scholarship and going for the Olympics as a figure skater, what's an academically gifted and athletically talented young woman to do?
