The first thing to be said for Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" is that Scott knows how to direct a historical epic. I might have been kinder to his "Gladiator" had I known that "Troy" and "Alexander" were in my future, but "Kingdom of Heaven" is better than "Gladiator" -- deeper, more thoughtful, more about human motivation and less about action.

Reelviews
Kingdom of Heaven is similar to Gladiator in many ways, with large, violent battle scenes and instances of great human courage and sacrifice, proving that not all that much changed between the time of the Roman Empire and the Crusades. Where Kingdom of Heaven can be found lacking, however, is in its context. Although the story is streamlined so as not to confuse viewers, there's a sense that a lot is missing - which, of course, is the case.
James Berardinelli
The Boston Globe
First things first. ''Kingdom of Heaven," director Ridley Scott's return to the sword-and-sandals genre he revived with ''Gladiator," is nowhere near as entertaining as that 2000 film.
Ty Burr
San Francisco Chronicle
To say that Scott did a beautiful job directing "Kingdom of Heaven" would be true, but it wouldn't convey the nature of the achievement. A better way to say it is that Scott, in the course of planning and making this huge film, made many thousands of decisions, little and big, and just about all of them turned out right.
