"Lucky Number Slevin" is too clever by half. It's the worst kind of con: It tells us it's a con, so we don't even have the consolation of being led down the garden path. The rug of reality is jerked out from under us in the opening scenes, and before long the floor is being dismantled. Crouched in the dark, I am resentful.

Lucky Number Slevin is a fascinating case study of what might result if Quentin Tarantino directed a script written for Alfred Hitchcock. From a screenwriting perspective, this is pure suspense, with twists that would appeal to The Master, including his favorite: mistaken identity. From a directorial standpoint, Paul McGuigan was evidently inspired by Tarantino, and some of the Pulp Fiction filmmaker's favorite actors - Bruce Willis, Robert Foerster, Lucy Liu - make appearances.

Beware strangers bearing long stories. After an opening salvo of bullets, "Lucky Number Slevin" properly begins when a hapless traveler (Sam Jaeger) is approached by the wheelchair-bound stranger (Bruce Willis), who wants to tell him a tale, related via flashbacks, of a family's massacre following a bad day at the racetrack.
