Millions (2005)

Critics Reviews: 8 out of 10

San Francisco Chronicle "Millions" earns its description as a family picture. Parents may find they enjoy it more than their children do -- you have to sit through a lot of movies to recognize the one in a million. It's the best film aimed at audiences of all ages since "Finding Nemo," and it doesn't have to rely on animation to create magic. The voices come out of the mouths of actual actors. Ruthe Stein

Filmcritic You’re a preteen growing up in the United Kingdom, and you just stumbled upon the loot from a bank robbery. What do you do? Tell your father? Keep it a secret? Contact the police? Give it to charity? Go shopping? Well, whatever you’re going to do — be fast, because in less than a week, the UK is switching to the euro, which will render the money useless. Blake French

ReelViews Lynch and Mamet both went G several years ago (Lynch with The Straight Story and Mamet with The Winslow Boy); now it's the Trainspotting director's turn. (Actually, the MPAA has given the movie a PG, but the content is appropriate for young teens and pre-teens, and this is likely the closest Boyle will ever come to crafting a kid-friendly motion picture.) Millions is a different sort of endeavor for the British filmmaker, but his fans will not be disappointed by some of the places where it goes. James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times Danny Boyle's "Millions," a family film of limitless imagination and surprising joy, follows the two brothers as they deal with their windfall. They begin by giving some of it away, taking homeless men to Pizza Hut. Damian wants to continue their charity work, but Anthony leans toward investing in property. They have a deadline: In one week the UK will say goodbye to the pound and switch over to the Euro; maybe, thinks Anthony, currency speculation would be the way to go. Roger Ebert
