I didn't expect a coherent story from "Mission: Impossible III," and so I was sort of surprised that the plot hangs together more than in the other two films. I was puzzled, however, by the nature of Ethan's relationship with Julia, his sweet fiancee. If he belongs to a secret organization that controls his life and can order him around, doesn't she deserve to know that?

Mission: Impossible III provides lots of action, but too little excitement. It generates lots of pyrotechnics, but too little heat. And it offers lots of Tom Cruise, but too little Ethan Hunt. In short, if you're yearning for a flashy, leave-your-brain-at-the-door summer movie that never does anything interesting or challenging, Mission: Impossible III has what you're looking for.

A lot happens in the third ''Mission: Impossible." Little bombs are launched up folk's noses and into their brains. A gorgeous tangerine Lamborghini Diablo is cruelly blown to smithereens. And tremendous time and effort are devoted to chasing down the contents of what might be the most dangerous thermos in the history of movies.

Director J.J. Abrams (of Lost and Alias fame) makes his big-screen debut with aplomb, utilizing fantastic sets, capturing tension and pulling tremendous performances from his A-list cast. Cruise and Hoffman especially shine; Cruise epitomizes the heroic leading man while Hoffman morphs into a cold-hearted killer.
