Monster-in-Law is appalling misfire of a comedy - a motion picture that takes a situation ripe for the blackest vein of satire and reduces it to a puerile and edgeless pile of goo. Forgive me for a moment if I bemoan the lost potential here. Give a project like this to Danny DeVito, whose War of the Roses existed in not dissimilar territory, and the possibilities are endless. James Berardinelli
The Boston Globe
The movie lets Fonda -- who hasn't acted on film in 15 years -- skewer her usual seriousness. She's accepted a part that calls for her to choke, slap, poison, kick, lie, punch, curse, shriek, and be generally loathsome, all while looking more fabulous as the movie wears on. She's a riot.
Wesley Morris
San Francisco Chronicle
There's something about "Monster-in-Law" that wants to be seen. It's a crude, obvious comedy, which occasionally clunks, but it's often very funny, as well as being a really shrewd bit of popular entertainment. Its appeal resides in a lot of things, not the least of which is a sophisticated awareness of what an audience brings to it.
Mick LaSalle
USA Today
Two of Jennifer Lopez's earlier movies, The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan, and now Monster-in-Law are concerned with idyllic unions. Even Enough, in which she played a bride who takes revenge on her abusive husband, began with a seemingly ideal marriage.
Is she working out her much-publicized relationship issues on film? Are these wish-fulfillment fantasies? Do we even care?
