Movie Rentals and Recommendations
Written: 09-20-2010

Sometimes choosing a DVD to watch can take too much time. Whether you find yourself in the movie rental store going up and down each isle more than once, or you find yourself surfing too many pages online, choosing a DVD to watch can be a challenging task. Yes, sometimes a blockbuster comes out that you know you will enjoy and choosing it is a no-brainer. However, there are hundreds of movies released each year and keeping up with what is out there is a time consuming task.

Ranking movies based on both box office revenue and critic reviews offers more of an unbiased movie rank. When millions of movie goers choose a movie week after week then that movie at least has something worth watching. When a movie breaks the 100 million dollar mark and has an above average critic review, than it is safe to say that the movie should be considered worth watching.

Netflix and other movie companies have spent a lot of money and resources developing "movie recommendation software" which will help fill your queue with movies that you will enjoy. I am a member of Netflix and it does a decent job of suggesting movies to rent. However, this method requires you to be a member and to have rental history in which you rank movies you have recently watched. The software will begin to learn what you like and do better over time at movie recommendations.

One option to consider in choosing a movie is to scan the top 500 movies according to US box-office sales. Consider it a valid vote. Lets face it, when a movie can keep revenue streaming for several weeks in the movie theaters, than it usually has some merit and should be considered for movie night.

Question: What about inflation? Shouldn't an older movie that makes the same box-office revenue as a newer movie be considered a little better?

Answer: Yes, you need to account for inflation which is about 3% over the last 20 years. With that said, box-office revenue still is an excellent method of ranking movies.
