In essence, Dead Man's Chest gives us an opportunity to join old friends on a new adventure that isn't substantially different from the old one. Many of the same elements are here - ghost ships, the walking dead, hidden treasure - and that's all right because it's part of what we might now refer to as the "Pirates of the Caribbean formula.

The film, like Sparrow, is an imperfect creation. To continue the opening analogy, I found myself childishly restless at one or two points, usually during scenes between Turner and his father Bootstrap Bill (Stellan Skarsgård). The film is too long (like the first), and it is perhaps here where it might have been shaved.

This film is a true joy. The writing is brilliant, and the acting is even better, one of those films with as many laughs as there are thrills.

Arrr, keelhaul the blaggards! The dreaded curse of the sequels hits home with a vengeance in ``Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," a noisy and lazy stopgap movie that goes absolutely nowhere and takes 2 1/2 hours to get there.
