Portable DVD Player
Written: 12-14-2011
I remember several years ago going to Walmart and buying a portable DVD player for the kids. This was before smart phones and wireless 3G.
The goal was simple, keep them occupied during our 15 hour trip to Disneyland! Today their are a lot of options for portable DVD players.
You have everything from smart phones, tablets, and in car entertainment systems. You also have the traditional version that is basically
the size of a netbook, but only with the funtionality of a DVD player. The question is which one is right for you?
The first question you need to answer is how much you want to spend. Tablets such as the iPad offer many more features than a DVD player.
The iPad is basically a mini computer and offers a long battery life that will last for the entire day on a road trip (well almost). It is
also very portable and easy to hold. It is light and pretty much can be propped any where with the iPad cover. This
option is going to cost around $500, plus you will need to subscribe to services such as Netflix or itunes which will have small additional
costs as well. Personally, if you are willing to spend the money, tablets are a great solution to a portable DVD player and you will most likely
find yourself loving the fact that you have a mini computer as well.
The second option to a portable DVD player is a smart phone or iPod touch. The touch is the same thing as the iPhone with out the 3G service.
This option is a great middle solution and costs around $200. You do have a smaller screen than a tablet or netbook,
but it is still big enough for a single user. The cool thing about the touch is it is small enough to carry around in your pocket, and you
don't get a more portable solution than that!
The last option is to go with the old-school or traditional portable DVD player. This is basically a min-laptop that functions only as
a DVD player. It is the cheapest option as you can find several brands for less than a $100. Most of these DVD players can easily handle
two movies on a single charge. It is not the most elegant solution, but it works and is the least expensive.

Question: Where is the best place to buy a portable DVD player?
Answer: I would have to say Walmart as it will be the least expensive and they have a great return policy. Most likely you will be able to find several under a $100.

I have a non HD receiver in my home that I purchased outright from DISH. I didn't want to pay a recurring fee every month to keep my cost down. I would like to add a few additional TVs (upstair bedrooms). I called Dish to ask how much the receivers were and that I was again interested in paying for them outright. They gave me a good price for a dual and standard so I could hook up an additional 3 TVs in the home. When I decided to go for it, they informed me that I would have to pay an additional $28.00 per month (more than half my monthly bill already) to have these TVs connected and to receive signal. Is this true? You must pay each additional TV connected in the home? Is there a way I can hook up my additional TVs to the existing receiver I have without having to pay for this monthly?
