I know it's magic because the week I saw Pixar's new movie, "Ratatouille ," there was a small rodent invasion at my home, and I left this movie worried that one of my traps might fatally snap on a gourmet rat like Remy, the movie's star. This is crazy, but there you have it.

Brad Bird may be one of the few animated filmmakers working today who understands what the concept of a "family film" means. It's something that offers material to viewers of all ages and doesn't lose one group by catering too strongly to another.

Like the French peasant stew for which it is named, "Ratatouille" isn't a fancy dish, but it's hearty and tasty, created from fresh ingredients and cooked up with unexpected flavors and dashes of spice, and it leaves a satisfying and inspiring warmth when it's done.

Like the best French cuisine, Ratatouille is ambitious and delightful. It blends a savory stew of ingredients that, when whisked together, create a wondrously tasty and visually stunning dish.
