Red Eye belongs to the genre in which a director attempts to sustain a heightened level of suspense for long enough that the audience will not notice how incredibly stupid the screenplay is. Alfred Hitchcock was a master at this - although some of the scripts he worked with were masterpieces, one could argue that his true skill as a filmmaker was evident with those that weren't.
James Berardinelli
San Fransico Chronicle
Wes Craven takes his time setting up the airplane thriller "Red Eye" as if it were a Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks romantic comedy. Finally directing a horror film with no supernatural forces at work, the creator of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" can savor the fact that he doesn't have to eviscerate anybody in the first 25 minutes.
Peter Hartlaub
Boston Globe
On film, Craven has already dismantled himself, his ''Nightmare on Elm Street" series, and, in the ''Scream" movies, the teen slasher genre that put him on the map. But his brilliance was costly. At 66, Craven seems to have forgotten that he would still have to work even after he'd murdered his beloved genre so effectively. He should start looking into reincarnation.
