I think Michael Bay sometimes sucks but I find it possible to love him for a movie like "Transformers." It's goofy fun with a lot of stuff that blows up real good, and it has the grace not only to realize how preposterous it is, but to make that into an asset.

The audience for "Transformers" is there for simple reasons: To see robot-on-robot and robot-on-human and human-on-robot violence. Over and over, the military characters on screen bark orders to "bring the rain!"

When it comes to Transformers, I have no ax to grind, pro or con. For me, it's just another loud, plot-deficient summer motion picture. In this case, nostalgia doesn't grip me - I'm too old to have played with the gadgets or watched the cartoon.

Yes, it's loud, explosive and silly, but it also perfectly embodies the concept of a summer blockbuster with its simple good-guys-vs.-bad-guys plot, cheeky humor and flawless special effects. Transformers, opening tonight in many theaters, is easily the best movie based on an adaptation of a cartoon TV series.
