"XXX: State of the Union" is theater of the absurd, masquerading as an action thriller. Consider. The president of the United States is giving his State of the Union message, unaware that outside the U.S. Capitol building, storm troopers in black body armor, with little red pin-points for eyes, are attempting to break in and assassinate him, as well as the vice president and everyone else in the chain of command, until they get to the secretary of defense, who has hired them for his attempted coup.

What many movie producers fail to realize is that one of the keys to making a superhero interesting is to give him an Achilles heel - Kryptonite, so to speak. And one of the big problems with XXX: State of the Union is that the protagonist is essentially invincible. He has no weaknesses. During those rare moments when he finds himself in a tight scrape, we have no doubt he will come out blasting.

They say that if you leave a monkey alone with a typewriter for 10,000 years, he'll produce a Shakespearean sonnet. But why wait that long? Best to come back in 10 minutes to pick up the screenplay for "XXX: State of the Union. " That way is more lucrative, less time-consuming and presents no risk of ending up with nothing but a rusty typewriter and a dead monkey.
